9th Annual Lower Merion Baptist Church Lenten Challenge
Inspired by the book "A Place at the Table" by Chris Seay, Lower Merion Baptist Church has participated in a Lenten Food Stamp Challenge since 2018. Those who choose to participate agree to limit their family's food spending to the food stamp limit for the month and a half of Lent and donate the difference to an anti-hunger charity (example: a household of two normally spends $600 per month or $900 for the length of Lent on food, and the food stamp limit for a household of two is $536 per month or $804 for the Lenten season would donate $96).
Since 2018, we have donated over $6300 to Heifer International to provide livestock and infrastructure to poor families. However, this Challenge is more than the money. At its core, it is a way to understand how those who are less fortunate live and to identify with the poor, so we encourage everyone to participate. If you don't think you can go the entire 46 days from Ash Wednesday on March 5th to Holy Saturday on April 19th, we have tables showing the spending limits based on weekly, biweekly, and monthly budgets as well. Please contact the church for more information.
